Afghan Killings

By: Mahlon Martin

An American staff sergeant is in military custody because he has been accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians. He was deployed to a small outpost where someone was wounded the day before the shootings, an attorney for the soldier said. His identity has been withheld by the military because they fear retaliation. The charges have not been formally made, but they should within the next few weeks. He is accused of leaving the outpost by foot on Sunday and was heading towards neighboring villages in the Panjwai district of Kandahar province. He was said to kill 9 children, 3 women and 4 men, but the U.S. has not confirmed the number of deaths. This week he was flown out of Afghanistan and is being held in Kuwait.
